5154 aluminum is a 5000-series aluminum alloy: the main alloying addition is magnesium, and it is formulated for primary
forming into wrought products. 5154 is the Aluminum Association (AA) designation for this material. In European standards,
it will be given as EN AW-5154. A95154 is the UNS number.
It has been in use since 1932, but has only received its standard designation in 1954. This material is well established: the
Further Reading section below cites a number of published standards, and that list is not necessarily exhaustive.
The aluminium / aluminum 5154 alloy is widely used in the manufacture of welded structures, storage tanks, and pressure
vessels. It is also used in salt water service.

The aluminum industry has created a system using a four-digit numerical designation to identify wrought aluminum alloys.
The first digit indicates the major alloying element. The second digit indicates whether there was a modification in the basic alloy.
The third and fourth digit indicates the specific alloy. The following represent the various groups:
1XXX | Aluminum 99% or greater |
2XXX | Copper - major alloying element |
3XXX | Manganese - major alloying element |
5XXX | Magnesium - major alloying element |
6XXX | Magnesium and silicon - major alloying elements |
7XXX | Zinc -major alloying element |
